With just coming around to the 3 year anniversary, I figured it was time to post a new article. I was actually going to post an article a while back on something but I felt it would have been a topic that would have opened a lot of debate rather than just being something to read. I don’t even remember what the subject was about at this point. I know I worked on it for a few days and scrapped it in the end. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The last time that I wrote a reflection piece would have been around the 1 year anniversary mark. I didn’t do one for the second year anniversary since I don’t feel like 2 years is of any signifcant time to write about. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I feel that Monkey Guitars is starting to be more recognized in Thunder Bay now. I thank the few people that have been pushing my name out there\/giving out business cards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One thing I do ask new customers is where did they hear about me – most answers have been a Google search for “instrument repair” or “guitar repair”. I will say, I find instrument repair a lot more exciting than throwing on a set of strings on a guitar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Big Three<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

In April of 2024, my first local sale of one of my guitars was made. The customer had brought a few basses and guitars to me for work before making the purchase of S\/N 021. The guitar had travelled in 4 countries over the summer of 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In November of 2024, I did my first one-on-one build with a customer. This customer came in, money in hand, ready to purchase a South Paw guitar on a Sunday. After trying out the three left-handed guitars I have available and a chat, he said he would come Tuesday to start building a custom one-on-one with me. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

This customer was right into it – on the second day, he told me to give him something to do because he didn’t want to stand around. I was very relieved that he was comfortable with using tools and I will say, his heel was VERY impressive in shape compared to anything I had produced at the time. We finished his guitar in about a months time. I was in the middle of working on S\/N 035 when we started on his build. We both had a good time doing the build together. Lots of laughs in there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shortly after starting the one-on-one build, I had received my first custom snare drum order from Ian MC. I was asked to build the thickest snare drum that I could possibly build from Purple Heart. The thickness ended up around 1.400″ – just shy of the 1.5″ we were targeting. The snare did have to come back for some rework on the bearing edge. And after some time, I received a message from Ian saying that he was pleased with the unique sound the snare drum produced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Moving Forward<\/h4>\n\n\n\n

As of right now, there are still some issues with the CNC side of things but it is getting sorted out so hopefully we will see some electric guitars soon. There should be 4 Telecasters coming out – not sure if they are all Thinline or not. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The acoustic guitars have hit 4th generation at this point – I am starting to branch out from the “traditional” guitar blueprints. There have been some upgrades and new options being tried. Other things will start to be implemented into guitar builds to making them better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I have been slowly getting some business for orchestral stringed instrument work – violins, mostly. Hopefully, the word gets out more to those players.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There is also a new unofficial quality assurance tester – Gordon – when he has time. His playing abilities are through the roof for a guy that stopped playing for a number of years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
