We had a brief chat about the snare drums and Ian had decided to use one of the snare drums that I had brought over to Tumblestone for drummers to try out.

A few weeks after Tumblestone, Ian and I discussed a possible build. I brought all available snare drums to his place for him to try out. About a week later Ian told me that he had a preference of the deeper and thicker snare drums from my builds. After some consideration, Ian said he wanted an 8 inch deep snare drum and intially said 1 inch thick but ended up wanting something thicker. I had agreed to make the snare drum as thick as I possibly can.

The target would be 1.5 inches thick or thicker depending on how thick I got the blocks to after getting them square. The end result after routing was about 1.4 inches.

Because of the thickness of the snare drum, any screws that came with the hardware had to be replaced with longer ones.

Something that I had been thinking about implementing was routing the logo through one of the staves. This idea was more for a snare drum that would be 0.500″ or less but we managed to route a logo on one of the staves. It isn’t through the stave but is still better than stamping it on the Purple Heart.

After a phone call with Ian, we finalized the rest of the hardware for the drum build. Ian supplied the heads and snare wire and I had to order in the rest. We discussed the lugs for his tall snare drum and decided to go with single mount lugs as I believe it would have a better visual appeal.

SPECS

Body Purple Heart

Diameter 14″

Depth 8″

Hoops supplied by Ian

Lug Casings Ross Percussion single end drum lugs

Tension Rods Ross Percussion 1 5/8″ tension rods

Snare Strainer Pearl SR014N strainer kit

Snare supplied by Ian

Batter Head Remo Emporor coated

Snare Head Remo Weatherking Ambassador snare

Serial Number 037-009 Customer Snare Drum Started on November 10, 2024; completed on December 21, 2024 After the presentation of Ed Blanchette’s baritone guitar at Tumblestone 2024, I was approached by Ian MC of Teknosis.
