Regardless of how bad the body could have been without seeing it, it was still worth while unless it had a giant hole in it or something.

Upon first look, I would guess that the violin was spray finished – it has a super glossy look to it like guitars. There was a lot of what appears to be cracking on the glossy finish on the top plate and back as well as a possible crack along one of the F holes to the lower rib.

I was actually excited to see a crack as it would give me reason to take the top plate off to try to repair the crack. I managed to get my inspection mirror in there enough to see that the crack wasn’t through the wood as I was expecting.

After the inspection, I did a wet sand with 1000 grit sandpaper to try to get off a few questionable “things” on the top plate and back.

*update May 13, 2024

I did attempt to French polish the top plate and back but it didn’t seem to take the shellac well or at all. I eventually wet sanded it again and buffed the body. It isn’t spectacular but is still better than what it was.

It was hard to get the soundpost through the F holes: I am not sure if something is going on with the top plate. Even the specialty tools to retrieve and install the soundpost were a bad fit into the F holes. It took some patience and use of tools in each hand to juggle the soundpost to position but I managed to get it in.

I am quite happy with how the bridge turned out. I did make one the previous day for the kit violin and it is good to get some experience with carving and shaping the bridge.

*update June 3, 2024

As I went to take the violin out of the case to loosen the strings for travel, I realized that the neck had separated. The fingerboard was right against the top plate. It will have to be addressed after I come back.

Toscani Violin I picked up this violin on April 21, 2024 for really cheap.
